In a unanimous vote during a special meeting on March 13, 2017, the PACT Charter School Board of Directors approved the hiring of a new Executive Director.

Dr. Emily Mertes will be the next PACT Charter School Executive Director on July 1, 2017, under a three-year contract.

The search for a new Executive Director began fall of 2016 after current Executive Director, Tony Simons, announced he would be resigning at the end of the school year. The PACT Board appointed a search team of parents, teachers, and staff who started meeting in December 2016. Led by Dr. Nathan Flansburg, a PACT parent and a principal in the Mounds View School District, the team worked diligently to determine the needs and expectations of a new leader and were pleased with the number of highly qualified candidates who applied and interviewed for the position.

Dr. Flansburg noted, “The search for a new Executive Director for PACT was thoughtful and extensive. The search committee came together, laid out the traits and qualities we were looking for to exemplify both the high academic expectations PACT holds, as well as a strong ethical leadership background. PACT also partnered with Bethel University to reach out to some of the best and brightest leaders who have passed through their Doctoral program, of which Dr. Mertes came highly recommended. During the search process the qualities of Dr. Emily Mertes stood out on a number of levels. She is well-versed in helping turn around and lead schools to high levels of academic excellence while doing so through focusing on instructional best practices. I believe she will bring high levels of partnership, collaboration, and a laser-like focus on student learning and success at all levels – it is an exciting time for PACT!”

During the interview, Dr. Mertes spoke about an appreciation she has for PACT to find someone to help with the school climate. She values children and families and knows the importance of relationships to accomplish tasks. School turnaround is a large part of her background along with process, structure, and coaching teachers.

Craig Novak, PACT School Board Chair, said, “Dr. Mertes comes to PACT highly recommended and with much excitement. She brings to PACT a wealth of education leadership experience and a wide variety of in-depth skills that will directly and immediately impact our school, to help lead us forward to higher levels of excellence. What is particularly impressive about Dr. Mertes is her warm, approachable, intelligent, and ‘hands-on’ leadership style. She is very dedicated and will work hard with all members of the PACT community to lead and help shape our school’s processes to improve our overall performance.

We are thrilled to have Dr. Mertes join the PACT family!

Best of Luck
